When drinking becomes a problem

January 3rd, 2011

The start of another new year is as good of time as any to go over the danger signs of drinking. One excellent indicator that things may not be going well is the fact that you are looking for this data in the first place. Alcohol can adversely affect relationships, work, family as well as one’s physical and mental well being.

The American Academy of Family Physicians says warning signs of problem drinking may include:

* Driving after drinking, getting a ticket while driving under the influence, or having car accidents.
* Feeling anxious, depressed or suspicious.
* Having problems with relationships that appear alcohol-related.
* Developing problems with self-esteem and generally taking poor care of yourself.
* Having difficulty sleeping, or finding it difficult to keep up at work.
* Noticing that your hands are trembling.
* Missing work due to being hung over.
* Blacking out or experiencing memory loss.

Marijuana Depression Connection

July 6th, 2010

It’s becoming more important than ever that parents who have become aware of their teens smoking marijuana should take immediate steps to intervene.

Reuters Health has reported on several reports that have found an assoication between marijuana use and increased risks of depression and anxiety disorders.   Researchers found a modest association between marijuana smoking before the age of 17 and the odds of suffering depression later on; early marijuana use was linked to a 50 percent increase in the risk of developing a depression “spell” after age 17.

Some past studies have linked heavy marijuana use, particularly early in life, to an increased risk of schizophrenia-like psychosis.

If common sense and discussion (without yelling and make wrong) don’t stop their marijuana smoking, then taking action and putting one’s teen in a rehab may become necessary. Drug rehab centers that help figure out why one is using drugs as oppose to just helping to stop using them would be of the most benefit.

If you would like to speak to a trained counselor on what options are available, we’re here to help at no cost or obligation to you. Call for immediate assistance (877) 502-1065.

Prescribed Heroin High from Doctors

June 5th, 2010

The Dallas Morning News website ran a story this week with the headline: “Houston area tops Texas in prescriptions for ‘heroin high’ drug cocktail”.  The story was from the Associated Press dated June 1, 2010. A doctor reportedly wrote more than 43,000 prescriptions over a 15-month period for prescriptions for three highly addictive drugs, which when taken together gives the user a “heroin high.”

The three drugs include hydrocodone, a narcotic known by brand names such as Vicodin; alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug known as Xanax; and carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant known as Soma.

The authorities are not yet releasing the name of this doctor; however, there are several other physicians who have written over 23,000 prescriptions over the same period of time, for the same type of drugs.

Clearly, there is a demand for these drugs. And whether they are being distributed through pain management clinics or on the street is yet to be determined.

These drug cocktails are powerful and there is a definitive market for them.

Texas implimented a Public Safety tracking system over 20 months ago which requires pharmacies to report to the state all prescriptions that doctors write for these controlled substances.

Perhaps there is more to be told behind these prescriptions.  But 43,000 prescriptions over a 15-month period appears to be excessive. Dr. C.M. Schade, a former president of the Texas Pain Society, said he knows of no legitimate medical reason for a doctor to prescribe all three together, which would make these prescriptions extremely worrisome.

Texas is not the only state with a demand for these prescribed “heroin highs”. It becomes evident that drug treatment rehabs would be a better solution.

Teen Alcohol Use Rises over Memorial Day Weekend

May 29th, 2010

More and more drug rehab treatment questions are coming from parents concerned about their teenager’s alcohol or drug use. According to SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), 7% of admissions to an alcohol or drug treatment program were aged 12 to 18 years old.

A timely article from HealthDay.com reminding that injuries from underage drinking rise over Memorial Day weekend holds some very interesting facts.

1. Visits to U.S. hospital emergency departments related to underage drinking rise by 11 percent over the Memorial Day weekend versus other days, a new report finds.

2. The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) report found that people under age 21 who combine alcohol and illegal drugs are 27 percent more likely to visit hospital emergency rooms over the Memorial Day holiday weekend compared to an average day.

3.  On an average, there are 199 such visits per day during the holiday weekend vs. 156 visits on other days, the report said.

4. Studies have shown that children who begin drinking before age 15 are six times more likely to develop alcohol problems than people who start drinking after they reach age 21.

As a parent, we need to be astute when it comes to our teen’s activities – be it Memorial Day weekend or not.  If you’re aware your teen has been abusing substances, you need to take action.  Our counselors can answer your questions; there is no cost to speak with us and there is no obligation to take our recommendations. We’re there to listen and hopefully help you, if necessary, to find a proper treatment program.  Call us now at (877) 502-1065.

Heroin Killing Instantly

May 24th, 2010

Heroin addiction is on the rise.  Overdoses are increasing and the need for effective drug rehabs is becoming more necessary than ever.

The Associated Press (AP) ran a story today which they titled, “Cheap, ultra-pure heroin kills instantly.” The byline was “Spike in overdoses linked to drug popular with Mexican smugglers.”

Cases of overdoses included one from Chicago where the coroner was quoted as saying, “We found people who snorted it lying face-down with the straw lying next to them.” Heroin deaths have tripled there since 2006. He added,  “It’s so potent that we occasionally find the needle in the arm at the death scene.”

The AP found these statistics:  At the start of the decade, roughly 2,000 people a year died from heroin overdoses nationwide, according to records kept by the Centers for Disease Control. By 2008, the drug was blamed for at least 3,000 deaths in the 36 states. Deaths from 2009 have not yet been compiled.  Heroin deaths rose 18.2 percent from 2007 to 2008, and 20.3 percent from 2006 to 2008.

Heroin is not child’s play.  This is not only “playing with the big boys”, it’s “playing with the devil. ” If you know someone who has been abusing heroin, or worse, has become addicted, they need help before it is too late.  Effective heroin treatment programs save lives.

Teen Heroin Use Shows Need for Rehab Programs

May 18th, 2010

Drug addiction treatment programs dealing with teenage drug abuse and addiction are available. Keep in mind, all drug rehabs are not created equal.  That is to say that each program has its own treatment method, and many do not admit minors.

In a very sad story out of Pinckney, MI, a town hall meeting has been called this week to focus on alcohol and drug issues after a recent overdose death of a Pinckney High School graduate.  The 18-year-old was found by his mother with a needle still in his arm.  the community is being warned about the rise of heroin use in schools and around Livingston County. The Pinckney Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking is now working with the community to develop a response to the issues, saying “enough is enough and we will not let another person die from alcohol or drug use”.

Each community around the country needs to have this type of town hall meeting.  No community is immune from the effects of drug abuse and addiction.  And when it comes to our kids, we need to be diligent in seeking help for them when drugs and/or alcohol are already being used.

Find out what your drug abuse treatment program options are. We’re available to go over what to expect during this extremely difficult time.  Our trained counselors are here to speak to you at no cost and at no obligation.  All information will be kept confidential.  Call us now at 1-877-502-1065.

Rehab Before Accidental Overdose

May 16th, 2010

Drug rehab treatment programs need to be accessible to all sectors of life. Lives are being lost unneccesarily at an alarming rate.  The Dayton Daily News ran a story today entitled, “Accidental overdoses kill in county at epidemic rate” where they compare highway patrol statistics to accidental overdose statistics in the past few years.  In 2009, Montgomery County reported 34 people were killed in crashes; however, deaths attributed to accidental but fatal overdoses were three times as many.  The story reported 122 had died from overdosing on prescription and illicit drugs.

The Drug Policy Alliance Network reported 26,000 lives were lost in 2006 in the US alone, citing that accidental overdoses claim more lives than firearms, homicides or HIV/AIDS.

From the highly publicised accidental overdose deaths of Heath Ledger to Anna Nicle, the untold story of many more have been documented year after year and the statistics are rising.

All drugs have the potential to be misused, especially when taken in combination with other drugs or with alcohol. Even drugs we think of as “safe” can cause death under the certain circumstances.

The bottom line is this, if your taking medications, do so responsibly.  If you’re not feeling right, or feel something has changed in your body with regard to your medications, call your doctor or if serious, 911.  If you know someone who has been abusing drugs, illegal or prescription, you should do what you can to get them help.  A drug rehab may be their last option before something horribly goes wrong.  We’re losing too many good people to accidental overdoses.  A proper drug rehab treatment just may save their life.

Call to speak with one of our counselors at no cost or obligation at (877) 502-1065.  We’ll go over the drug rehab treatment options with you.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

May 10th, 2010

Remember the expression, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? The expression is completely applicable when it comes to drug addiction.  Drug rehabs and drug treatment centers come after the fact; they don’t prevent anything.  They are NOT the “pound of cure.”  Prevention then would actions taken which wuold be long-term survival actions for individuals and our society as a whole.  If done properly, drug abuse and addiction would be a thing of the past.

It’s terrific that the White House’s new drug control strategy to be released this week boosts community-based anti-drug programs, encourages health care providers to screen for drug problems before addiction sets in and expands treatment beyond specialty centers to mainstream health care facilities…wouldn’t it be even better to have better solutions available for those reaching for drugs in the first place?

Yes, we need anti-drug programs, yes we need education, yes we need screening, but those are all still after the fact.  The individual reaching for a drug is reaching for a solution.  That’s not to generalize why people start taking drugs.  There are a multitude of reasons why one would reach for a marijuna joint, or a bottle of gin, or a syringe of heroin.  The reasons can range from trying to fit in to wanting to alleviate stress, to not wanting to be bored.

So many kids today are latchkey, hanging out after school with nothing to do.  We don’t even allow them to work!  Add to that a failing educational system, a sense of entitlement mentality, in some areas gang activities or bullies to contend with. Or how about the kids of parents who abuse drugs?  Or are alcoholics?  How about teens whose parents physically or mentally abuse them or their other parent?

And how about the kid who has decent parents, but whose parents don’t have a clue about what their kid is up to?
So many teens have no games (if I do well in school, I get to learn how to drive or if I help with dinner I get to choose our next movie rental) or long-term goals (such as becoming a dancer, or a doctor).

The list of reasons why an individual would reach for drugs would be near impossible to catalog.  But trust me, there is a reason behind each person’s drug use.

I salute Obama’s pledge to treat illegal drug use more as a public health issue than a criminal justice problem.  But the truth be told, it’s a moral issue, and just before that, it’s a morale issue.

If one were happy with one’s lot in life.  There would be no need to smoke a joint.  If one was productive and looking at their next goal and how to achieve it, there would be no need to drink themselves into oblivion.  If one were able to communicate well with the spouse and kids and truly feel they were in a happy relationship, there were be not demand for prescription psych drugs.

What if our goal as a nation was to raise our next generation to be responsible for their lot in life?  Show how being a productive member of society and contributing and helping others raises one’s morale faster than a rush of crystal meth.  How there is no entitlement.  You reap what you sow…

Of course we’re then entering into the arena of spiritualism, of self determinism and preservation of freedom of choice…and who can confront that?

Need help?  We’re here to answser your questions.  Looking for a drug rehab treatment center that will help put one’s life back together and end the cycle of addiction once and for all?  We’ll talk about your options.  Call now (877) 502-1065.  There is no cost to speak to us and we’ll make a referral that make sense for your situation.

Know the Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

May 8th, 2010

With social drinking, comes social intoxication. Sometimes people don’t realize how much they’ve already have drank, others partake of games encouraging large amounts of alcohol to be consumed.   And while alcohol abuse most certainly increases the chances of alcohol poisoning, social drinking may result in it as well.

Alcohol poisoning, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, is a serious – sometimes deadly – consequence of consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time.

Binge drinking is rapidly downing 5 or more drinks in a row and is the main cause of alcohol poisoning.

Alcohol poisoning can also occur when alcohol is taken in combination with various drugs (prescription or illegal) or when one has accidentally ingested household products that contain alcohol.

It is important to understand that alcohol poisoning can occur to people who normally do not abuse alcohol or who are not dependent upon it as shown in the case when alcohol is combined with various drugs (prescription or illegal).

It is reported that approximately 50,000 cases of alcohol poisoning are reported annually in the U.S., roughly translated, that’s one person dying from alcohol poisoning a week.

If someone has had way too much to drink, they could die if you don’t intervene.  They may be appearing to “sleep it off”, so how can you tell?

If you try to wake them up and they don’t respond, check to see if they have cold clammy, pale or bluish-toned skin. Check their breathing as well. If their breathing is slow and irregular – less than eight times a minute or ten seconds or more between breaths, they are in trouble. Also if they vomit while pass out and do not wake up during or after, get help.  Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Symptoms of Alcohol poisoning:

Absent reflexes
Slurred speech
Response to pain diminished
Confusion
Difficulty waking the person
Erratic behavior
Slow, shallow or irregular breathing
Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
Inability to make eye contact or hold a conversation
Drawn-out vomiting
Unconscious
Seizures

Alcohol poisoning is extremly dangeous and potentially fatal.  If you suspect someone is suffering from alcohol poisoning, get help immediately.  Do not wait to see if the person can “sleep it off.”

If you know someone who continually abuses alcohol or who is an alcoholic, call for advice on how to best get help.  Find out what alcohol treatment programs are available.   Our counselors are available at no cost to you and all information will be kept confidental.  Call (877) 502-1065

Drug Detox Helps Addicts End Addiction

April 30th, 2010

My daughter came to know the word detox at an early age. It was sort of used tongue-in-cheek for when special occassions rolled around where large quantities of candy were involved, she knew she would be undergoing a “detox” after the event. This included Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter and her birthday. We would encourage her to get through her candy (hopefully within a week) and then, the detox would begin. She’d have lots of water, and increase in fresh fruits and veggies, and no sugar for at least two weeks. We rarely had sugar treats lying around so there was no temptation. She just knew this was a way of life in order to cleanse her system and for us to get our mentally balanced kid back. (you ever see a kid hyped up on sugar?).

Of course when it comes to a drug detox, lives are at risk. Not only on a health-related level, but on a mental/spiritual level as well. A well-done detox helps to not only clear the person’s mind, but helps them get at cause over their body’s toxicity. The individual is doing something about it. This is no light cognition: “Something can be done about it.” Think about that phrase. When you start to believe nothing can be done and all is lost, then the downward spiral of drug addiction will certainly continue. But once the individual actually comes to the understanding that they have the power to do something about it, then they’ve become at cause and empowered and now have the ability to stay clean. They’ve made the decision. No one is making them “be” a certain way. It’s life altering!!

If you need help finding a drug treatment program which offers a detox program, we can help.  There is no obligation to speak to one of our counselors, we’re here to help match up programs with the addict’s specfic needs.  (877) 502-1065.
